Apart from his academic studies and his training in riding and dancing, at school he was also obliged to learn a trade, and he chose carpentry. His education was traditional and conservative, but he became the first member of the royal house of Bavaria to spend time at a public school, namely at the Maximilian-Gymnasium in Munich, where he spent four years. In his youth, Rupprecht spent much of his time at Schloss Leutstetten, Starnberg, and at the family's villa near Lindau, Lake Constance, where he developed a keen interest in all types of sports. At this point, Prince Rupprecht, age 43 at the time, finally became heir apparent and crown prince of Bavaria. When Luitpold died in 1912, his son Ludwig became the new Prince Regent and in 1913, Otto was deposed and the highly ambitious Ludwig was officially crowned King of Bavaria after changing the Bavarian constitution with the consent of the government. While the Bavarian government managed to get rid of King Ludwig II via a clever intrigue (by declaring him insane due to excessive spending on various ambitious building projects throughout the country, which had led to a vast amount of public debt & treathened to tarnish the reputation of the Bavarian monarchy among the population), which led to his banishment to Berg Castle at Lake Starnberg and his mysterious death in the lake only one day later, Otto remained de jure King of Bavaria until 1913, but was permanently represented by Prince Luitpold, as he suffered from severe shizophrenia and paralysis. However, when both King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886) and his mentally-ill brother, heir apparent Prince Otto of Bavaria (1848-1916), both of whom were childless, were declared incapable of ruling, it became clear that the royal line of King Maximilian II of Bavaria (1811-1864) would eventually die out and that the succession rights to the Bavarian throne would therefore pass into the hands of Prince Luitpold and his descendants.

Born to Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (1845-1921), son of Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (1821-1912), who in turn was the third son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1786-1868), noone assumed that Rupprecht would ever become king.
